You may believe child porn charges affect only disreputable people who were “asking for it.” If so, you’re wrong. Child porn charges can hit all walks of life, from teachers and photographers to retirees and even law enforcement officers.
That occurs, in part, because local, state, and federal investigators zealously attack cases of suspected child porn, and they often cast wide nets using the Internet to pinpoint suspects.
We say “suspects” because not everyone arrested is guilty.
Some are falsely accused of having child porn. But once they’re arrested for child porn and subjected to humiliating accounts in the news media, a great deal of damage already is done, even if eventually they aren’t convicted.
That’s why public shaming in sex offense cases needs to stop.
Recent Child Porn Arrests Near Houston, Texas
Indeed, child porn arrests are booming. In the latter weeks of 2017 alone, they have included these cases:
- In Hondo, the FBI arrested a Border Patrol Agent, age 34, of Hondo and charged him in federal court with producing and sharing child pornography. FBI agents reportedly traced sexually explicit files involving a young girl to the agent’s home, which they raided, seizing his viewing devices and arresting him.
- Federal, county and local law enforcement officers recently executed a search warrant of the home of a Longview man and arrested him for possessing child pornography. He was taken to Harrison County Jail with bond set at $1 million.
- In Wichita Falls, a professional truck driver, age 58, was arrested by Wichita Falls Police and charged with two counts of promotion of child pornography. His bond was set at $200,000.
- In federal court in Dallas, a Garland Independent School District employee, age 60, pleaded guilty to the federal child pornography offense of one count of transportation of child pornography. The man was a special needs teacher for Garland High School.
- In San Antonio, a prominent photographer, age 47, pleaded guilty to child porn charges and now faces five to 40 years in federal prison. The man had worked professionally under his own photography company.
The list of child porn arrests and convictions goes on and on, and the lesson is clear:
No one is immune from being targeted by authorities for child porn offenses, and the penalties can be extremely harsh.
